Pretrial Intern Spring 2018


The New York City Criminal Justice Agency, Inc. is a private non-profit corporation serving the City's Criminal Justice system by providing pretrial and research services.

CJA pursues its goal of servicing the criminal justice system in the following ways: decreasing the number of days spent in detention by criminal defendants; screening defendants for a range of non-custodial sanctions; reducing the rate of non-appearance in court among defendants released from detention and awaiting trial; and providing information and research services to criminal justice policy makers, City officials, and the public.

CJA is currently offering the following internships for undergraduate students eligible for major related internships for academic and experiential credit only. Criminal Justice, Legal and Justice Studies, Social Sciences or related majors, preferred. Students must be registered and attending classes in the current semester.

BEX (Bail Expediting) Intern - Non-Salaried
Bail Expediting programs aim to assist the courts in identifying and expediting cases meeting specific bail criteria. Criminal Justice, Social Service or related major, preferred. Some day and evening hours may be available.

Working under supervision Interns will monitor court activity to identify bail eligible defendants and assist in canvassing the court for potential bail sureties. Interns will assist in tracking defendants who are being arraigned or who have missed pre-arraignment interviews. Other clerical and support tasks, as needed.

FTA (Failure to Appear) Intern – Non-Salaried
FTA programs track defendants who fail to appear for post arraignment court dates. Assist in gathering data from court documents used to identify defendants who have failed to appear for scheduled court dates. Under direct supervision, interns will contact defendants and their attorneys to arrange voluntary appearance in court. Assist in preparation of statistical data for routine reports, some data entry and clerical duties required.

NOTE: Candidates must be able to commit 10-20 hours per week, or meet the individual school’s minimum requirement for weekly hours. Good communications skills required, bilingual skills, a plus. Candidates must be able to accept an assignment in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan or Queens based on availability. Consideration will be given to student preference and school schedule. Students seeking credit must provide name and number of their Internship Coordinator.
