The Opportunity

The New York City Criminal Justice Agency (CJA), New York City’s main pretrial service agency, is seeking a Communications Manager to help us tell our story to policy makers, funders, and the public. This is a unique chance to work for a preeminent criminal justice nonprofit and develop a communications infrastructure from the ground up.  

With the closing of Rikers Island and the possibility of bail reform consistently in the news, this is a time of intense interest in criminal justice issues in New York City. CJA is seeking a highly motivated and innovative communications professional to assist us in explaining CJA’s important work.

Organizational Summary

The New York City Criminal Justice Agency (CJA) is New York City’s main pretrial services agency, combining operations, demonstration projects, and research under one roof. CJA provides pretrial services to the courts and over 200,000 persons arrested annually in New York City.  Information collected about these arrestees and subsequent case processing is maintained in the agency’s database systems, which are used to conduct research on arrestee characteristics, case processing and court outcomes, and on issues in criminal justice policy. CJA operates in the criminal courts and detention facilities within the 5 boroughs of NYC, employing over 200 employees, citywide. 

General Responsibilities

  • Manage the day to day operations of the organization’s website redesign and site relaunch
  • Work with senior executives, research staff, and borough leadership to develop narratives that tell the story of our work to policy makers, funders, and the public
  • Maintain the organizations social media presence
  • Draft public facing documents including issue briefs, press releases, and public statements
  • Work with Operations staff to establish and maintain internal communications documents such as staff newsletters


  • Bachelors Degree 
  • Exceptional writing skills
  • Experience in various communications channels including social media activation, website content development, earned media placements and public events
  • A proven ability to take initiative and see projects to completion in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience in Criminal Justice is a plus

Salary: Commensurate with experience
