THE OPPORTUNITY

Our work seeks to reduce jail overcrowding and unnecessary detention in New York City.  

The Pretrial Associate position supports the  Agency’s efforts to process defendants for arraignment in a timely manner, using best practices in communication and collaborative working with other criminal justice stakeholders such as NYPD, Department of Correction and the Office of Court Administration.

PROGRAM SUMMARY

In partnership with the New York City Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice, the Criminal Justice Agency, (CJA) is New York City’s main pretrial services agency, combining operations, demonstration projects, and research under one roof. CJA provides pretrial services to the courts and about 250,000 persons arrested annually in New York City. CJA’s primary operation consists of screening criminal defendants arrested within the five boroughs of the City for pre-trial release. CJA operates 24 hours a day, conducting release interviews in police department detention facilities throughout the city. 

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Interview defendants in secure detention facilities (Central Booking), and court locations in all boroughs to determine community ties and recommendations for release
  • Help Court involved individual and their families with information about arraignment court procedures and processes
  • Explain bail payment procedures and assist sureties with the bail payment process.
  • Provide information to individuals who have missed court dates to facilitate their return to court, and avoid re-arrest.
  • Provide arraignment court judges with information used to assist them in making recommendations for release.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer Literacy with the ability to work with multiple data screens
  • 1 year of relevant work experience (transferable skills). Preference is given to those with client service, customer, service, human services. Direct criminal Justice experience not necessary.
  • Bilingual-Mandarin/English speaking only

SALARY: $33K -$39K + (top salary includes night differential for shifts after 3pm)

LOCATION: Brooklyn

HOURS: (Depending on Availability)

  • Days: 7am-3pm or 8am-4pm
  • Evenings: 3pm-11pm or 4pm-12pm
  • Midnights: 11pm-7am or 12am-8am
