Pretrial Associate


The New York City Criminal Justice Agency (CJA) is a not-for-profit pre-trial and research service organization. We provide pre-trial services to the courts and about 250,000 persons arrested annually in New York City. CJA’s primary operation consists of screening criminal defendants arrested within the five boroughs of the City for pre-trial release. CJA operates 24 hours a day, conducting release interviews in police department detention facilities throughout the city.  This is a great entry level opportunity, with on-the-job training. 4 weeks vacation, union benefits, tuition assistance, and retirement savings plan.


  • Interview defendants in Central Booking locations in all boroughs to determine community ties
  • Record defendant’s interview responses into Agency’s computerized database
  • Transcribe defendant criminal history records
  • Conduct telephone verifications
  • Determine release recommendation for defendants using standardized risk assessment
  • Monitor arraignment outcomes and assist defendants who have bail imposed
  • Explain bail payment procedures and assist sureties with bail payment process
  • Work in various interdepartmental programs such as Failure to Appear and Bail Expediting Program


  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer Literacy
  • 1 year of relevant work experience

SALARY: $35 -$37K + (top salary includes night differential for shifts after 3pm)

LOCATION: Applicants must be willing to work in any of the borough locations:

  • Lower Manhattan
  • Downtown Brooklyn
  • Queens
  • The Bronx

HOURS:  (Depending on Availability)

  • Days: 7am -3pm or 8am - 4pm
  • Evenings: 3pm-11pm or 4pm to 12pm
  • Midnights: 11pm-7am or 12am - 8am
